When I started my business, I thought I had to know it all. I needed to know how to do everything related to my business and keep it all close.

What I’ve recently realized is that I did that because I was afraid to have witnesses to my failure. Up until last year, I was still in “just in case” mode. You know–where you have backups of your backups just in case.

My new hero, Rachel Rodgers, helped me understand why. Let me tell you, there’s a lot to unpack.

When it comes down to it, I had to take a minute, find some people who would tell me about myself, and make the changes.

Those changes started with outsourcing.

What is outsourcing?

Outsourcing is when a business decides to hand off certain tasks to a third party such as a contractor. They have them perform certain tasks, handle operations, or even help manage their business.

Common tasks you may see being outsourced:

  • Accounting

  • Customer service

  • General administration

  • Social media management

  • Graphic design

  • Project management

  • Digital marketing

  • Website management

  • and SO much more!

This is just a small list of what you can outsource for your business. You can outsource for a one time project such as a website build or you could outsource for a continuous service such as help with your email marketing.

Benefits of outsourcing

There are numerous benefits of outsourcing. Knowing what the benefits are to outsourcing can help you decide if it is something that will work for your business.

🡲 Save time and money.

When you hire a contractor, you will be able to save time as you are already hiring someone who specializes in the service you are offering. Long gone are the days of multiple weeks of training a staff member to learn how to implement a new task. You will also be saving on money by not having to have someone on staff for certain hours of the day. Contractors work by the project or by the hours that they are actually working. You also have the added bonus of not having to pay for employee benefits. A contractor is in charge of paying for all of their taxes and you don’t have to worry about paying for sick time or vacations.

🡲 Not limited to your local area.

One of the greatest benefits to being able to outsource is you are not limited to your local pool of talent. You could choose to work with anyone from anywhere in the world. You will be able to find and budget for the talent that you are looking for to move your business forward.

🡲 Access to contractors who possess specific skills.

Are you specifically looking for someone to build your website? If yes, then there is another benefit of outsourcing! You can hire someone who possesses a specific skill.

🡲 Able to stick to your zone of genius.

By hiring a contractor you are giving yourself the ability to stick to your zone of genius. You can outsource the tasks that you are not good at, don’t have the time for, or simply don’t like to do.

Will outsourcing work for my business?

Of course with anything there can be its disadvantages too. You sometimes might not find the perfect fit for the project that you are working on or you may not be able to control exactly when someone is working.

So how can you tell if outsourcing is right for you? Sit down and calculate your costs. See if it would be more beneficial to you to hire a contractor or an employee. You should also prioritize your business needs. Are you looking for someone to help with specific tasks or are you looking for someone who can be available from 9:00 - 5:00 to answer any customer questions?

Outsourcing may not be for everyone, but it definitely is the right answer for a lot of small business owners!
