You may have heard the term sales funnel thrown around before, but do you know exactly what it is and why you need one?
A sales funnel is a start to finish journey, mapping out the path you would like a customer to go through on their way to purchase your product or service.
For example, you share a link on Facebook that someone clicks on. That link takes them to a landing page on your website. Now what? How do you get them from clicking that link to see your website to actually purchasing something from your website? That's what your funnel does.
From large corporations to small business owners, you NEED a sales funnel if you are selling on your website. A sales funnel is a necessary part of the sales process, and without a proper funnel setup, you could be missing out on a lot of potential customers.
Where do you start when building a funnel? There are 5 traditional steps to a sales funnel.
Awareness
Interest and evaluation
Desire
Action
Re-engagement
A sales funnel can be more extensive and in depth, depending on the product and/or service you provide. Once you get through the full funnel the first time, the funnel shifts a bit. They may also have more steps if you consider adding in lead magnets, tripwires, upsells like coaching, consulting services, or live events. You can even add in customer advocates down the road. But if you are just starting out, it can be less overwhelming to begin with the 5 traditional steps of a sales funnel.
.
The awareness phase is meant to bring visibility to your brand and to start collecting leads. During this stage of the sales funnel, you are bringing attention to your brand. This step is where your audience will begin to engage with your business for the first time. At this point, focus on sharing ideas, advice, and fun/inspiring content. The end goal is to focus on content and ways to market yourself to bring awareness to your brand.
You can build awareness by:
Creating social media posts
Making your website SEO friendly
Guest posting on a blog or appearing on a podcast
Creating videos
Attending in-person events
.
Once you’ve caught the interest of a lead, you’ll start building a relationship with them and see what their goals are for interacting with your brand. This stage is great for increasing your audience’s interest in your business by creating content around your offer.
During this stage you can:
Build email campaigns
Write and share blog posts
Create a lead magnet
.
Once you hit the desire stage of the sales funnel, your lead is now interested and considering making a purchase. However, they aren't quite ready to make a purchase yet. This step is where they’ll be looking at the cost of your product or service and how they can reach their goals by purchasing from you. Showing them how your product and/or service will help them reach their desired outcome is your goal in this phase.
For this stage you could:
Generate testimonials from past customers
Highlight case studies
Offer discount codes
Present a webinar
Offer a consultation
.
Congratulations--you are now ready to fully convert your lead to a customer! Your customer has decided to buy your offer. You should make this stage as easy as possible for your lead by offering multiple places in your marketing campaign for them to know exactly where to go to make their purchase.
The success of your customer doesn’t end here. This is the stage where you focus on setting them up for success with your product or service. The success of your funnel depends on the outcome of your customers and if they will turn into loyal customers for years to come.
In this stage you can:
Provide special offers
Offer extra trainings as an incentive
Send them an ebook
Follow-up email campaigns
Let them in on insider tips and updates
.
.
.
Once you sell to a customer, don't forget about them! It is so much easier (and cheaper) to get an already converted lead to purchase again than it is to start over from a fresh lead. Plus, if they enjoyed your product or service, they may pass along your information to someone else and become an advocate of your brand.
In this stage of the funnel, you can:
Offer a referral program
Send a re-engagement email campaign
Consider what your upsell offers could be
Create a new webinar experience
Provide proper customer service
Funnels have to be carefully crafted with your target market in mind. Sales funnels can be as simple or as extensive as you want them or need them to be, but the traditional 5 steps are a great way to get started.
